ABS-CBN’s policy not to pay ransom for journalist abduction worked! Ces Drlon, cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion and Professor Octavio Dimanpo were freed around midnight.
When the P15 million ransom was not paid at noontime yesterday, the second time the ransom demand was not paid, the abductors seemed to have lost the will to continue holding the captives. This happened through the brokering effort of Sen. Loren Legarda.
Five days ago, Ces, ABS-CBN News and Public Affairs Head Maria Ressa and ABS-CBN Vice Presiden for News Gathering Charrie Villa asked for Sen. Loren’s assistance.
She did a similar act for brokering the release of Arlene De La Cruz who was kidnapped by an Abu Sayyaf’s rival group some years back. Full of mosquito bites, Ces broadly smiled upon her release. Sen. Loren said no ransom was paid. After the de-briefing in Zamboanga City this morning, Ces and Jimmy will fly to Manila immediately. (Photo courtesy of ABS-CBN)
